Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed CBI’s plea for cancellation of bail of Saradha chit fund scam accused and senior Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra.
The division bench of Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice Tapas Mukherjee also asked Mitra to surrender before a lower court immediately in compliance of the order.
The development came a day after Mitra quit as West Bengal transport and sports minister, apparently to blunt the Central Bureau of Investigation’s argument that his continuation in the cabinet was a proof of his immense influence despite being indicted and jailed in the multi-crore-rupee scam.
Mitra was granted bail by a lower court on October 31, nearly 11 months after his arrest on December 12 last year.
The CBI subsequently moved the high court seeking cancellation of the bail.
Following the CBI’s move against the bail, the high court subsequently ordered that Mitra be kept under house confinement till the disposal of the matter.
