Hyderabad : In a major drive against quacks, police in Hyderabad’s old city have taken into custody 107 medical practitioners for alleged violation of rules.
Undertaking a cordon and search operation, police raided several clinics being run illegally in different parts of south zone.
Those arrested include registered medical practitioners(RMPs as well of unani, ayurvedic and other systems who were practising illegally.
The arrested people including women were either holding fake degrees or were running unauthorised clinics.
A police officer said 50 cases of cheating or negligence would be booked.
The drive was undertaken in the wake of last week’s incident in which a quack burntthe body of patient after he died at his clinic due to his medication.
The quack was x-ray technician but was practising as unani doctor with a fake degree.
Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Satyanarayana said the raids were conducted as part of public safety and crime prevention.
He said RMPs were practising with pretension as doctors and giving injections and practising medicines though they were not authorised to do so.
Doctors of ayurvedic, unani, sadhak were also practising allopathy in violation of rules.
Those arrested include 59 RMPs/quacks, one fake dentist, 48 holders of Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS), two with Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery (DHMS) and two with Bachelor of Electrohomeopathy Medicine and Surgery (BEMS)
Due to increased cost of health care, poor approach RMPs or quacks for treatment of various ailments, said police, adding they are verifying their certificates of those arrested by seeking the opinion of the Telangana Medical Council.
