The case was registered against MIM leader Javed Don for attempting to spread enmity between two communities by delivering a hate speech where he referred to Memon, who was convicted and hanged for terrorist activities, as a martyr.

Javed Don allegedly made the controversial remarks when he was addressing people in a rally at Rohodaswada for party candidate Shakeela Bano contesting the Kalyan-Dombivli civic poll.

Soon, his video started to make rounds on mobile application Whatsapp in which he was spotted calling people to vote for MIM and in the middle of his talk calling Memon as a martyr.

Based on the video, a case has been registered against Don at Bazarpeth police station for violating the poll code of conduct. Police is now investigating the case and verifying contents of the video.

MIM is contesting nine candidates for the civic election.

Yaqub Memon was hanged at Nagpur Central Prison on July 30, 2015 after he lost all legal battles in commutation of death sentence. TADA court and Supreme Court in a subsequent appeal judged him to have played pivotal role in execution of Mumbai serial blasts in February 1993.

MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi along with many other political and non-political personalities, including many former judges, had demanded for leniency towards Memon.
