Jamia students celebrate Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary

New Delhi: Paying tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 125th birth anniversary, students of Jamia MIllia Islamia gathered at Jamia Hall of Boys residence in the hostel premises and distributed sweets.

The commemoration took place after Friday prayer when three students – Mohammad Anas, Mustafizur Rahman and Daud Arif organized an event out of their own pocket and delivered short speech.

The event commenced with a talk on Ambedkars’ Legacy. Emphasizing on the need to realize Babasaheb’s dream, Anas called upon all the students to take a pledge to do whatever they can to end all sorts of social evils that exist within one’s own self.

“Ambedkar Sahab always was of the vision that true Swaraj can be achieved only if we are able to eliminate the discriminatory practices, therefore I call upon my fellow Jamia’ites to take it up and do the best they can in this direction” said Anas in his maiden speech.

This was followed with a short discussion on the Ambedkar’s contribution towards minority groups. “Despite all odds, Ambedkar fought for the rights of the minorities and ensured India move towards a more inclusive development” added Rahman.

Other students including Siraj and Daud spoke on the need to discuss and debate. They commented that it was Ambedkar who taught India the art to debate and discuss. Students also observed two minutes of silence and closed their eyes to imagine of Ambedkar’s dream for the nation.

“It is important for us, especially the youth of this Nation to learn about Dr. Ambedkar and carry his legacy to the future generation, while UN realizes how important it is, we students are often seen limiting our interests to stuff like IPL” said another student Mohd. Ekram.

Towards the end of the event, sweets were distributed among the students and the staff.
