Latur (Maharashtra): A Muslim policeman who was beaten up badly and paraded in the streets by a mob in Latur District on the eve of Shivaji’s birth anniversary has written to superiors for transfer expressing fear of repeat attacks if he continues to work at Renapur police station.
On February 19, ASI Shaikh Yunus Pashamiya, 56, was beaten up by 200 men after he opposed a group from tying saffron flag in Ambedkar Chauk sighting superior officer’s orders of not allowing flags in sensitive areas after which he was beaten up badly and asked to hold saffron flag, parade and dance.
Speaking with TwoCircles.net Imran Shaikh, 26, son of Pashamiya said his father fears from joining duty at the same police station and therefore has sought transfer to another police station.
“Only one year service (of my father) is left and he does not wish to serve at the town whose people humiliated him. In fact he is very apprehensive that similar attack may be repeated if he continues there”, Shaikh said.
Pashamiya’s retirement is due next year and he is willing to serve remaining 14 months peacefully at another police station.
“There is no point in joining duty at the very police station where he was subjected to shameful act. Our family also requested my father to either get transfer or quit”, Shaikh further said.
On asking if his family is satisfied with the investigation in the matter, he said, “Police acted swiftly after the incidence was widely reported and arrested some accused. But main culprits of the offence Chandrakant Chavan and Dhananjay Chavan who led the mob are still absconding.
Either police is shielding them or police is proving incapable to arrest them”.
Both these Chavans are seen leading and instigating mob in the purported video that went viral soon after the incidence showing Pashamiya being paraded under the hostile environment holding saffron flag.
Expressing fear of the family from accused persons once they are released on bail, Shaikh said, “All the arrested accused are sent to jail and will start getting bail soon. We fear these accused may resort to revenge after coming out on bail”.
As per reports, so far no decision has been taken on transfer request of Pashamiya by his superiors and he is recuperating at his home in Udgir.
Due to the wide reporting of the incidence in media Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was compelled to issue statement last week saying that such incidences of attack on forces will not be tolerated.
Soon a probe was ordered by DGP Praveen Dixit after suspending Inspector Laxman Rakh of Renapur police station for dereliction in duty.
