Section 144 issued in Malda after angry mob kills truck driver for ‘killing’ girl in an accident

An enraged mob fatally attacked a truck driver after his vehicle hit a girl killing her instantly in Mothabari block of Malda district of West Bengal on Monday.

Both the groups: the driver and deceased girl side, clashed with each other with police firing tear gas shells and resorting to lathi-charge to control the situation.

Local police and Rapid Action Force (R.A.F) had to use tear gas and lathi charge for dispersing the mob. Administration clamped section 144 in six villages of the locality and arrested 10-12 persons from the two groups.

As per reports, the accident took place near Kathalbari under Panchanandapur gram panchayat ii, 5 km away from Mothabari police station and 24 km away from Malda town on Monday. One Preyasi Mondal, 15 years old from Tulsiramtola village, riding cycle was hit by a truck and died on the spot.

The driver, Hasibur Rahaman, 32 years old from the nearby village, Pirtola at Uttarlakshmipur, 3 km away from Mothabari, was caught by the people present at that time there and brought to a nearby club where he was thrashed and beaten to death.

His truck was also torched by the crowd. Hassibur’s death infuriated the relatives and locals of Uttarlakshmipur, Michutola villages and they blocked road demanding justice for his death by arresting those culprits engaged with his murder and compensation for his family.

The police took possession of the dead body from the agitating mob by using tear gas and lathi charge.

As per local newspaper reports, Malda district administration and police officials reached the spot and offered a job in Panchayat and a house under ‘my house’ project to the family of Hasibur.

Later the Mothabari administration clamped Section 144 for seven days at Panchanandapur gram panchayat, Rathbari I&II, Uttarlakshmipur, Gangaprasad and Mothabari gram panchayats under Kaliachak block ii in order to control the impending situation at the locality. [G3]

When contacted, Mothabari police termed “the situation under control” in the locality. “We have arrested from both groups who were agitating and who are involved in the murder case. But for the time being, we cannot disclose their names and details about them,” a police official said.
