Protest to demand the release of J & K leaders at Jantar Mantar by opposition parties

On the call from DMK Leader MK Stalin to all the like-minded opposition parties to join in the protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi on 22nd, leaders from different political parties joined the protest today against the abrogation of Article 370 and to demand the release of the leaders wrongfully detained in J & K.

Karti Chidambaram, congress MP and son of P Chidambaram, who was arrested by the CBI last night in the INX Media case, flew from Chennai to Delhi and joined the protesters.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, Brinda Karat, Sitaram Yechury, Sharad Yadav, Manish Tiwari, Manoj Jha, Mukul Wasnik, Tiruchi Siva, Ramgopal Yadav and Dinesh Trivedi were among the leaders who attended the protest.

They raised slogans demanding the immediate release of the leaders detained and to resume the communication services and restore normalcy in the state that has been hampered ever since the special status of Kashmir was scrapped on August 5.

The leaders also released a resolution listing their demands in which they have stated that the crackdown on the rights of free speech and right of assembly go against the spirit of the constitution that guarantees these rights to all the citizens. They also said that the arrests of the leaders are a matter of grave concern.

Among the political leaders who have been detained are ex Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah of NC, Mehbooba Mufti of PDP and Shah Faseal of & & K Peoples movement who are brought back from the airport and booked under the PSA and detained.

According to reports nearly 500 workers of political parties have been detained in makeshift detention centers.

There is a very tight security in the state and apart from communication services shops and other business establishments are closed and a curfew is still in place.
