Baghdad : The death toll of the suicide bombing at a crowd of police recruits in the volatile province of Diyala on Tuesday rose to 28, an Interior Ministry source said.
“The latest reports said that up to 28 people were killed and some 42 others injured by the suicide bombing in the town of Jalwlaa, some 150 km northeast of Baghdad,” the source told Xinhuaon condition of anonymity.
Earlier, the source put the toll at 10 killed and 20 others wounded when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest struck police recruits lining up outside a police station in the town.
The attacker arrived at the site in his car and was stopped by the police, the source said, adding that the man then jumped from his car and ran into the crowd where he blew himself up.
Diyala, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants despite ongoing security crackdown conducted by U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces.
