Kuala Lumpur : A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale hit Indonesia on Thursday which made authorities issue a tsunami warning that was canceled after less than an hour.
The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said in a press release that the quake occurred 122 kilometers northwest Ternate town in North Maluku province, at a depth of 10 kilometers .
There were no reports of damage or casualties yet, it added.
Indonesia, a nation of 17,000 islands, is very prone to quakes due to its location atop the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet.
Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 that killed 168,000 people in the country’s Aceh province.
