US Violent Crimes in 2007 Reach One Million

Washington : US showed alarming violent-crime rates in 2007, exceeding 1,400,000 according to a report on Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

According to federal police data, 1,408,337 violent crimes were reported during that year, representing a slight drop of 0.7 percent, compared to the previous year.

According to the FBI, that alarming number is equivalent to 469 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.

Of those actions, 60.8 percent were aggravated assaults, 31.6 percent robberies and rapes and 1.2 percent murders, the report said.

Firearms were used in the 60 percent of the murders, in 42.8 percent of the robberies and in 21.4 percent of the aggravated assaults.

The number of firearms in the hands of US people is estimated at between 250 and 270 million, according to official sources.
