Brussels : European Union (EU) commissioner for external relations and neighborhood policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner on Wednesday praised the legislative elections in Rwanda, which started last Monday.

Ferrero-Waldner congratulated in a statement the success of the Rwandan authorities in organizing elections.

She said that when compared to 2003 elections, this year’s polls showed progress in transparency.

The EU had sent 101 people to monitor elections.

EU humanitarian affairs commissioner Louis Michel said the elections in Rwanda were very important.

“Since the genocide, the second legislative elections in Rwanda is an important step towards boosting of democracy,” he said in a statement.

He called on the authorities in Rwanda to make good use of the elections for the sake of strengthening of security, stability and democracy in the African country.
