Mumbai : Harassed by a spate of bomb hoax calls, Mumbai Police are planning to recommend stringent punishment for those caught making such calls, a police official said Friday.
In view of the serious nature of such calls, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) shall also be involved in investigating such calls, ATS Additional Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh said.
The matter was among the issues discussed at a high-level meeting Friday evening at the police headquarters.
Singh pointed out that since June, Mumbai Police has received 35 bomb hoax calls. Only 15 percent were genuine, pertaining to unidentified objects noticed by alert citizens.
Presently, making a hoax bomb call can attract up to two years in prison. The police want this increased to five years.
