Tel-Aviv : A Palestinian driver rammed into a group of Israeli soldiers in downtown Jerusalem overnight, injuring 20 people, police and ambulance service sources said Tuesday.
A Palestinian man driving a black BMW was shot dead by an Israeli army officer after he swerved onto the sidewalk and hit a group of people at Tzahal Square, near the walls of the Old City.
“We can confirm it was a terror attack,” the Haaretz newspaper quoted a police spokesman as saying.
A total of 19 people were hospitalized, five of them with serious injuries. Local media reported that 16 of the injured were military personnel on a trip to Jerusalem.
It is the third such incident in the past three months. In early July, three people were killed and some 30 injured when a bulldozer driver went on a rampage in downtown Jerusalem. Three weeks later, 18 people were injured by a bulldozer before the driver was shot dead. Both attackers came from Arab-populated East Jerusalem.
