Prominent Kashmiri cleric escapes grenade attack

Srinagar, India : Tension gripped several parts of the capital city Wednesday after news of an attack on a senior religious leader spread.

Unidentified persons hurled a hand grenade at the house of Maulana Shoukat Ahmad, Ameer (Chief) of Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees in Srinagar’s La’al Bazar locality Tuesday evening. Shoukat was not present in the house at the time of the attack.

“The grenade exploded inside the compound of the house, shattering window panes of the house” police said adding all family members present inside were safe.”
Shoukat is a key member of Kashmir Coordination Committee (KCC) spearheading the ongoing anti-India movement in Kashmir.

Maulana Shoukat told local media that he doesn’t know who was behind the attack.

However, the people in his locality said they suspect a government hand.

“Moulvi sahib is part of Coordination Committee. The government is trying to eliminate all resistance leaders or detain them in one pretext or the other,” Rising Kashmir newspaper quoted, a resident of the locality as saying.

Angry youth took to streets early today and clashed with riot police at various places.

Protestors were shouting anti-India slogans and demanding a probe. Police meanwhile said an investigation has been launched into the attack.
