The International Seismic Safety Centre (ISSC) will help IAEA members ensure the safety of their nuclear power plants in the case of earthquakes and minimize damage to the plants, an IAEA release said here.

The devastating July 2007 earthquake in Japan which damaged the world’s largest nuclear power plant Kashiwazaki-Kariwa underlined the need for international collaboration in order to protect nuclear facilities from seismic impact.

The ISSC, consisting of scientists and nuclear safety experts, is established within the IAEA’s Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and will serve as a safety service centre for nuclear installations worldwide.
