Villagers of Chui Drahama village informed officials at a police post that many houses had been burnt.

Army soldiers located close-by rushed to their assistance and doused the fire.

Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sudanshu Pandey said: “We have come to know through the army that over 20 houses have been burnt in the fire. There was no loss to life.”

Pandey said that relief material was being rushed to the area “which is very cold and those people would not be having warm clothes and food”.

A similar fire had destroyed over 100 houses in nearby Margi village last year in which over 50 people were injured.

The thatched houses made of dried grass in mountainous villages were vulnerable to fires.
