Mohali : It might have been a long wait for Amit Mishra to make the Test cut, but the debutant made the most of the opportunity with a sensational five wicket haul in the first innings against Australia.
And the 25-year-old Rohtak leg-spinner attributes his success to the seniors in the side.
“I have been playing well in the domestic circuit for the past two years. I spoke to seniors and worked hard on my bowling. The seniors helped me a lot and always backed me and I never felt as if I was playing my first Test,” said Mishra, who came into the limelight after he picked up a hattrick for the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Mishra’s five for 71 helped India wrap up Australia’s first innings for 268 in reply to the hosts’ 469. His efforts put India in a comfortable position with the hosts taking a huge 301 runs lead after the third day’s play.
For the 25-year-old from Rohtak, the wicket of Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke will remain a memorable one.
“I cherished the wicket of Clarke. It was a googly and he was completely bamboozled. But I can’t forget my first wicket (Simon Katich), it will be a memorable one too,” he added.
Mishra has now posed problems for the team management, which will have a tough time to select the eleven for the third Test match in Delhi. Mishra replaced Anil Kumble, who had a shoulder injury.
But with the India captain set to declared fit for the Delhi Test, the team management will have to sacrifice one player to accommodate Kumble and Mishra both. They will also have to think whether they can field three spinners in the match.
