Student tied with ropes, dragged on ground in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : A five-year-old child was tied with ropes and dragged for nearly 50 metres by authorities in Uttar Pradesh for not attending school regularly, an official said Thursday.

“We have learnt that inhumane treatment was meted out to the child, Alok Gupta, studying in the kindergarten at a private school,” officer in-charge of basic education Awadhesh Kumar told IANS over phone.

He said Alok was tied and dragged Wednesday and was also made to kneel down in front of the school gate for nearly two hours. A case against the principal and the manager of the school in Deoria district of Baghuchaghat village, about 280 km from here, has been registered.

According to information available, Alok was unable to attend school probably due to health problems, Kumar added. A team has been sent to inquire into the incident.

“By Thursday evening, strict action would be taken against those involved in the corporal punishment which has been banned in schools following directions of the Supreme Court,” he said.
