UN rushes aid to flood-hit Sudan

New York : UN humanitarian agencies are rushing food and health kits to southern Sudan where heavy rains in recent days have affected nearly 10,000 people.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has till date distributed 1,500 kits of anti-diarrhoea medicines and oral rehydration salt, while the UN World Food Programme (WFP) has sent 15 days' supplies of food rations, UN spokesperson Marie Okabe told a news briefing Thursday.

An additional 600 survival kits were on their way to the affected area by barge, she added. UNICEF has also provided drugs for distribution by mobile clinics.
