Police here said that a mob stoned the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers.

“After tear smoke shells and batons failed to quell the mob, the CRPF opened fire to bring the situation under control,” a police official said.

The firing killed a young man, Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, 24, instantly. Four others sustained bullet injuries, the official said.

“The injured have been shifted to hospitals in Srinagar for specialised treatment. More security forces have been rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control,” he said.

Groups of youths engaged the police and CRPF in the town Saturday too. A mob had severely damaged a police vehicle in the town when it was bringing some men detained for violence to the town from Kupwara district.

Locals blamed the security personnel in the old town area of Baramulla for ransacking their homes after Saturday’s clashes.
