At a ceremony in the white-walled Golden Throne Room at Tashichhodzong, the seat of the government, Wangchuck was crowned by his father Jigme Singhe Wangchuck.

The king has received the title of Druk Gyalpo, or Dragon King.

His 52-year-old father abdicated two years ago, as part of a series of reforms to turn the country into a democracy.

The country, home to less than 700,000, held its first democratic election for a new prime minister and parliament in March this year.

Celebrations in Bhutan will last for three days. The king is expected to deliver a speech to the nation on November 7.
