New Delhi : Cowsheds not far from the main gate of the historic Taj Mahal, encroachment on the main road leading to the monument and stinking drains in the city of Agra may soon vanish as the government has taken up an 'Agra Revitalisation Project' at a cost of Rs.394.4 million.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Ambika Soni Tuesday informed parliament that her ministry has taken the project for Agra revitalisation and visitor management for the Taj Mahal.
The integrated project will be completed within three years.
Soni said apart from conservation and preservation of the monument, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) also undertakes development of its gardens and facilities for tourists.
"A total expenditure of Rs.2.86 crore (Rs.28.6 million) was incurred on the above account during the last three years," she said.
The minister said the ASI undertakes the conservation of the Taj Mahal strictly in accordance with the archaeological norms.
The 17th century white marble 'monument of love' is an architectural marvel and attracts millions of people from several parts of India and abroad.
