The joint co-ordination committee of both the Hurriyat groups co-chaired by Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had asked people to hold anti-poll protests after the Friday prayers and observe a total shutdown Friday afternoon.

Educational institutions, banks and shops remained shut and vehicles stayed off the roads in the entire summer capital as contingents of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the police were seen asking people to remain indoors.

“Section 144 of the criminal procedure code is being enforced in the city to prevent the separatists from creating a law and order problem here,” a senior police officer told IANS.
