Chhabildas Mehta dead

Ahmedabad : Former Gujarat chief minister Chhabildas Mehta, who took part in India’s independence struggle, died here Saturday, family sources said. He was 84.

He had been ailing since December and died at the SAL hospital.

Mehta became chief minister Feb 17, 1994 following the death of incumbent Chimanbhai Patel. He then headed the Congress government for 13 months, till March 14, 1995.

In May 2001 he quit the Congress and joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
