The 31-year-old AC Milan star, who played in the UEFA Champions League final win against Liverpool in May, wants to concentrate on club commitments, the BBC reported on its website.

He said: "I will never join the national team again. My adventure with the Azzurri finishes here."

Nesta, who won 78 caps, was part of Italy's squad that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

He has not played for his country since injuring his right thigh in the third game of Italy's triumphant World Cup campaign.

Nesta underwent shoulder surgery in December and returned to help Milan win the UEFA Champions League, but opted to sit out Italy's recent Euro 2008 qualifiers because he was getting married.

He joined Milan in 2002 and recently signing a contract extension keeping him at the San Siro until 2011.
