Australia, Pakistan enter Commonwealth volleyball semi-finals

Kolkata : Australia trounced Nigeria in straight sets to make their way into the semi-finals of the second Commonwealth Volleyball Championship at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here Wednesday.

Pakistan also booked a place in the last four with a win over South Africa, who also made the grade from Group B despite the loss.

Pakistan topped Group B winning all their league matches. In a battle to decide the group leaders, Pakistan outplayed the tournament dark-horse South Africa, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20 in a match that lasted just over an hour.

In a completely one-sided affair, the Aussies dominated the Africans from the word go and took just 57 minutes for the 25-15, 15-12, 25-16 victory.

The third straight win in as many outings puts Australia on top of Group A. The Aussies play their last group game Thursday against hosts India, who enjoyed a day off in the five-team group.

In another Group A game, Sri Lanka overcame a stiff Bangladesh challenge to post their first win in the tournament. The islanders won a gruelling one-and-half hour battle 20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-21. Both teams are already out of the semi-final race from the group having lost to both India and Australia.
