Kanpur, India : Condemning India’s “dependence” on the US for probing the Mumbai terror attacks, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said the government should instead hand over evidence of Pakistan’s involvement into the carnage to the UN Security Council.
Talking to reporters during a seminar here, he said, “India should not depend on US President George Bush’s help on the sensitive issue of terrorism. Instead it should approach the Security Council and submit all the evidences of Pakistan’s hand in the Mumbai terror attacks”.
Asked about the reduction in the petroleum and diesel prices, Karat said it was not sufficient.
“When prices of crude oil on the international level have gone down by a huge margin, the government should atleast reduce the petroleum prices by Rs 10 and diesel by Rs 5 . The LPG prices should also be reduced,” he said.
Karat said his party would launch a protest to pressurise the Centre to further lower the oil prices.
Criticising the US’ efforts to encourage speculation in getting the prices of petroleum products hiked, Karat said at a time when oil prices had reached USD 150 per barrel, Bush had accused India and other Asian countries of using large quantity of petroleum products, which the US president claimed had led to the price escalation.
But now when the speculation has stopped in the US market, the prices have come down to nearly USD 40 per barrel and the whole world is aware who was actually responsible for the hike, he said.
