US envoy in Pakistan after regional archrivals appeared on brink of war

Islamabad : US Undersecretary of State John Neegroponte arrived on Thursday in a follow-up effort by the superpower to defuse renewed escalation between archrivals, Pakistan and India.

Negroponte, during his brief daylong visit, was to hold meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

According to Foreign Office sources, the talks were to mainly focus on initiatives taken by Islamabad to clamp down on terrorist elements, possibly involved in the recent Mumbai terrorist attacks that killed nearly 200 people and wounded hundreds of others.

The visit by Negroponte came after ndian Foreign Minster Pernab Mukherji, in remarks made in New Delhi, rejected that he made a call to Pakistani president prompted the latter order his military froces to go on high alert and brought the rivals at the brink of another war.

He said India has provided Pakistan a list of 20 militants.
