The term of UNMIN, set up by the UN to support the peace process in Nepal, is due to end Jan 23.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will present the request with his recommendations to the Security Council in January, and the term is likely to be extended, the Kathmandu Post newspaper said.

UNMIN started work in Nepal in January 2007, following the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement between the government and the Maoist rebels to end decade long communist insurgency.

The mission scaled back in June this year after Nepal’s election, limiting itself to political affairs as well as monitoring of arms of the former rebel combatants.
