Lucknow : At least 28 people were drowned when a boat filled with people attempting to flee an inundated village in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district bordering Nepal sank in strong river currents Wednesday.
The boat, with more than 50 people on board, was also loaded with the belongings of the people who were leaving the marooned Harkapur village in the district.
According to district Superintendent of Police, Prashant Kumar, the boat capsized due to the strong currents of Rohin river which is in spate. The river has inundated 154 villages in the district.
Police rescue teams and divers are looking for the victims.
