India should go to UN to build pressure on Pakistan: Yechury

Kolkata : India should go to the United Nations (UN) to build “maximum international pressure on Pakistan” to combat the terrorism issue, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury said Sunday.

“I think India should mobilise maximum international pressure on Pakistan to combat terrorism. The matter should be taken to the UN to get the maximum support from various countries to fight the terrorism issue,” Yechury told reporters here at an interactive session – Citizens’ Security in view of Terrorist Activities – organised by Calcutta Citizens’ Initiative.

“There’s a resolution in the UN to fight against terrorism globally. If any terrorist module uses any particular country or territory for their subversive operations, there are also provisions to take action against that country,” he said.

“There is a permanent regulatory cell in the UN which deals with the issue,” he said, adding India must seek help from the UN through a proper channel, instead of talking separately to the US for assistance.

“Given the present international relation between India and the US, I think, we also need to step up our internal security arrangements. With India becoming a closer ally of the US after signing the civil nuclear agreement, the vulnerability of our country has increased,” Yechury said.
