Serial blasts greet Guwahati on New Year Day, 5 dead

New Delhi: Just two months after Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, was ripped apart by serial bombings claiming 88 lives, today on New Year day the city was again hit by three serial blasts in which at least five people are reported to be killed and 40 others injured.

The blasts hit three crowded areas in Guwahati

According to media reports, the first bomb kept in a dustbin went off at Birubari at 3.30 injuring three persons who were admitted to the hospital and identified as Altaf Ali, Fatema Begum and Raul Ali, says an Indian Express report.

The second blast took place around 5.30 pm in Bhootnath. This blast took place before Home Minister P Chidambaram took to the route. The minister has gone to Guwahati to take stock of the situation.

The third blast took place outside a Big Bazar retail chain outlet at Bhangagarh, an upmarket commercial area near Guwahati Medical College. At least two persons killed in that blast and three wounded. The dead have been identified as Amal Das and Kahil Sheikh.

The hand of ULFA is being seen in today’s blasts.
