Indian team for under-21 world snooker announced

New Delhi : Lavanya Baskaran and Arantxa Lael Sanchis will be among the 10-member Indian squad announced here Tuesday for the $12,000 under-21 World Snooker Championship in Goa this month.

Baskaran and Sanchis will join eight men to make the 10-member Indian team for the championship at the Bogmallo Beach Resort from August 22-31.

The two girls were selected after the trials held in Bangalore Sunday, the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) said in a statement.

The other members of the team are Rishabh Pandya, Shravan Mohta, Shivam Arora, Shahbaz Adil Khan, Ajay Bhushan, Pushpinder Singh, Balaji and Younus Kuchi.

Chennai-based Lavanya has been on the domestic circuit for a few years while Pune-based Arantxa is a newcomer.

For the first time, men and women cueists will compete on the same table as per a decision of the International Billiards and Snooker Federation.

A total of 78 players, including eight women, have sent in their entries for the 10-day championship.

England, Ireland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Latvia, Thailand, China, Egypt, Iran and Singapore are some of the countries that have confirmed their participation.

It is the third time that India is hosting a world meet after Bangalore played host twice in the past.
