Somdev makes Chennai Open final as Schuettler pulls out

By IANS,

Chennai : India’s new tennis sensation Somdev Devvarman reached the final of the ATP Chennai Open after his Swiss opponent Rainer Schuettler withdrew from the semi-final due to a wrist injury here Saturday.

Somdev thus became the first Indian to make the finals of ATP Chennai Open and in Sunday’s title clash will play the winner of the second semi-final between Marin Cilic and Marcel Granollers.

Withdrawing from the tournament, a dejected Schuettler said: “During yesterday’s doubles match I started feeling pain in my left wrist. As I warmed up for the semifinal, I wasn’t able to hit a double handed backhanded, I felt a strong pain. I would only be able to slice and I’m also afraid that the injury would get worse. I had the same a few years ago but it wasn’t as bad as now.”

Schuettler, an Olympic men’s doubles gold medallist with Roger Federer, will go to Melbourne for the Australian Open hoping that he gets well in time.

“I feel sorry for the crowd and the tournament. It is a very disappointing moment for me,” he said.
