New Delhi : A man shot and injured his 22-year-old woman friend before shooting himself in the head in central Delhi Sunday afternoon, police said.
The man, in his early 20s but yet to be identified, had come to his friend Uma Rani’s rented accommodation in New Rajender Nagar with flowers in the morning. Uma, staying in the capital for a year, was not home as she had gone to appear in an exam.
The police said Uma, on return, found the man at her home. The two had a heated argument and he pulled out a gun.
“He first fired two shots. One hit Uma in her neck while the other was lodged in her chest. The man then committed suicide by pumping one bullet into his temple,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi) Jaspal Singh
“The man died on the spot. The woman was rushed to the Ganga Ram hospital, where doctors describe her condition as critical,” Singh added.
The police said they were trying to ascertain the man’s identity and the reasons behind the incident. A case has been registered at the Rajender Nagar police station.
A police official investigating the case said the shooting could be the result of a love affair.
“We are investigating as to since when these two were in touch and what relations they had. The man has died and now we are waiting for Uma’s statement,” said the officer.
“Our first priority is to ascertain the identity of the deceased and get in touch with Uma’s family,” said the officer.
The police have seized their mobile phones for clues in the case.
