31 generals in Dominican Republic sacked for drug trafficking

Havana : Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez Sunday ordered the retirement of 31 generals for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking, according to reports reaching here from Santo Domingo.

The decision was taken just two days after Fernandez had said in a joint session of the Congress that he will not hesitate to take drastic measures against members of the armed forces and the police.

Among the dismissed, 10 were from the National Army, nine from the War Marine, nine from the Aerial Force and three from the National Police, the Dominican Presidency said in a communique.

According to local daily “Listin Diario”, some 538 military personnel, including dozens of officers, have been ordered to retire from the armed forces in the last six months for alleged involvement in drug trafficking and other crimes.
