Tehran : Member of Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Mahmoud Mohammadi said on Monday that Iran is the only country in the Middle East which stood up to the US hegemony.
Mohammadi made the remarks in a meeting with to Uruguay’s Senate MP Laura Gillen in Tehran.
He said that Iranian foreign policy calls for expanding relations with the Latin American countries including Uruguay in political, economic and trade fields.
Referring to the role of parliaments, particularly parliamentary friendship groups, in helping promote cooperation, he called for expansion of relations between Iran’s Majlis and Uruguay’s Senate and House of Representatives.
The head of Majlis Foreign Relations Committee affiliated to the Parliament’s Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy added that Uruguay has adopted realistic stance on the Middle East and world issues, noting that the two countries enjoy common ground for cooperation and exchange of views on important global developments.
Turning to the US pressure creating obstacle in the way of Iranian nuclear program, he said that the Islamic Republic of Iran continues with its peaceful nuclear energy program under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, because all countries, signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), are entitled to produce civilian nuclear energy.
Gillen, for her part, cited common grounds to expand relations and cooperation between her country and Iran, calling for the Majlis’ all-out support to develop relations with Uruguay.
She said that Uruguay is willing to expand political and economic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The MP gave priority to expansion of political and parliamentary tours with the aim of upgrading relations.
