Byelection for Rohtash Nagar in Delhi announced

New Delhi : The Election Commission Wednesday announced byelection in the Rohtash Nagar assembly constituency in Delhi following the death of Congress leader Ram Babu Sharma.

The byelection will be conducted on May 7 – the same day the Lok Sabha polls will be held in the capital.

Votes will be counted on May 16 – again, on the day counting would be undertaken in the entire country for the Lok Sabha polls.

“A casual vacancy has occurred in the legislative assembly of Delhi from Rohtash Nagar assembly constituency in January 2009 due to the death of Ram Babu Sharma, a member elected from that assembly constituency,” the Election Commission said in a statement.

The last day for the notification is April 11, while the last date for making nominations is April 18, it said. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is April 22.

Sharma, the Congress legislator from northeast Delhi’s Rohtash Nagar and a former Delhi Pradesh Congress chief, died following a heart attack. He was 53.
