Guwahati : The Election Commission Tuesday warned of “zero tolerance” with regard to violation of the model code of conduct, as the poll panel assured a free and fair election during the five-phase voting process that begins April 16.
“There shall be zero tolerance against anybody violating the model code of conduct,” Election Commissioner Navin Chawla told journalists here.
Chawla wrapped up his two-day visit to Assam after reviewing the poll preparedness, including security issues.
The Election Commissioner confirmed that the full bench of the poll panel would examine the complaint by the opposition relating to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi accepting money from the tea industry for the elections.
“We shall discuss the matter Thursday,” Chawla said.
Assuring that adequate central paramilitary troopers would be deployed, Chawla said all arrangements were being made as per the security needs.
“We would ensure free and fair polling and see to it that adequate security personnel are deployed in all the states,” Chawla said.
The Election Commissioner said micro observers would be placed in sensitive areas to ensure free and fair polling.
“In each constituency there would be three observers and in sensitive areas there would be micro observers deputed,” Chawla said.
The Election Commissioner said in view of the Electoral Photo Identity Card not being in place in Assam, voters would have to bring some identity proof while casting their votes.
“The head of the family must carry some identity proof and the rest of the family would be allowed to vote on the basis of the identity proof produced by the head of the family,” Chawla said.
