Ranchi : A man in Jharkhand was arrested for trafficking after his wife who was believed to have died four years ago returned home and accused him of selling her off to an affluent family in Punjab.
Prada Kumari, a resident of Tungritand village in Silli block, about 70 km from Ranchi, married Dilip Mahto in 2004.
In January 2007, the couple went to Punjab to earn a living. Prada was pregnant at that time. In April, her husband returned to Tungritand and informed Prada’s parents that she had died in Punjab during childbirth.
To the shock of the villagers, Prada returned home Tuesday and alleged that her husband had sold her off.
“My husband had sold me to an affluent family in Punjab. When I wanted to return home, the master of the house told me that my husband had sold me for Rs.100,000.
“I tried to overcome my shock and planned to escape. One night, I fled from the house,” she said.
On the basis of the complaint filed by Prada’s parents, Dilip was arrested Thursday for forgery and trafficking.
