Agra : A unique mass marriage programme was organised here Saturday to help widows, widowers and divorcees to find spouses and tie the knot.
A large number of social activists and community leaders were present to support the programme organised by the Bright Youth Organisation which has kindled new hope in the hearts of lonely people.
Chief organizer Mohit P. Mathur told IANS: “In recent years, various caste panchayats and communities have been organising mass marriages to cut down expenses. But no one thought of the pain of loneliness suffered by widows or divorcees. The response to our programme has been heartening and we feel more such interactions have to be frequently organized.”
On Saturday, the organisation also held programmes to generate public support for female children and inter-caste marriages.
Programme coordinator Ashok Goyal said: “Today we felicitated 101 couples who have two daughters and no sons. This is aimed at appreciating their decision not to extend their families to get a son. We want society to honour such people who have daughters and are contented.”
