Guwahati : Two paramilitary troopers were killed and 13 injured Saturday in an attack on a goods train by tribal separatists in Assam, officials said.
A police spokesman said militants belonging to the outlawed Jewel Garlosa faction of the Dima Haolam Daoga (DHD), also known as Black Widow, attacked the goods train near Wadrandisa station in North Cachar Hills district, about 380 km south of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.
“The militants fired indiscriminately using automatic weapons in which two paramilitary troopers were killed and 13 civilians injured,” police official A. Das said.
“Although it was a goods train, locals always use the train to commute over short distances as communication in the region is not good.” The dead troopers wer guarding the train.
Police said the rebels fled the scene.
On Friday, almost in the same area, Black Widow militants attacked a passenger train killing one security personnel and injuring 17.
In another incident late Saturday, Black Widow militants lobbed a grenade at a Border Security Force (BSF) post near Haflong, the district headquarters of North Cachar Hills.
“There were no casualties as the grenade exploded yards away from the BSF post,” a BSF official said.
Lok Sabha in the district are scheduled for April 16 in the first phase.
