“Durga Soren has been served a notice as to why he should not be expelled from the party. Durga has been given five days’ time to reply to the notice,” said Champai Soren, vice president of JMM, who was projected as the chief ministerial candidate after Shibu Soren quit the post after losing the Tamar assembly by-election in January.

Durga Soren is fighting the Lok Sabha election for the Godda seat which was conceded to the Congress in a seat sharing agreement.

Durga Soren filed nomination papers on a JMM ticket. Congress and some JMM leaders tried to persuade Durga to withdraw his nomination papers in favour of the Congress candidate Furkan Ansari.

JMM party sources said that the formal consent to issue the show cause notice was taken from Shibu Soren who is recuperating from urinary tract infection and cardiac problem in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), New Delhi.

JMM and Congress had worked out a seat sharing formula and agreed that they would not field their candidates on seats which had sitting MPs. Godda is a Congress Lok Sabha seat.

While filing his nomination papers, Durga Soren had said that he would teach a lesson to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and particularly the Congress which he alleged had hatched a conspiracy to ensure Shibu Soren’s defeat in the Tamar assembly by-election.

Durga Soren, who is the general secretary of JMM, also maintained that no seat sharing formula was negotiated with the Congress.
