PM salutes the ‘spirit of Mumbai’

Mumbai : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday paid glowing tributes to the “spirit of Mumbai” and the people of Maharashtra, terming the country’s commercial capital as “a city of hope.”

Addressing media persons here this afternoon, Singh said that despite facing terror several times, the Mumbaikars have displayed their unique spirit and Mumbai will carry on undeterred. “I salute the people of Mumbai,” he said.

Admitting he came to Mumbai with “mixed feelings”, he dwelt on the Nov 26 terror attacks and expressed his sympathy for the victims and their families.

Discussing the problems of the city, Singh said that there have been issues related to transport and infrastructure affecting the people of the city.

“We have taken several steps and (are) doing more to improve the infrastructure, and better transport facilities for the middle class, improvement of the living conditions of the people, especially those living in slums. We are committed to make Mumbai into a global, world-class city,” the prime minister asserted.

He said that last year, the nation experienced high inflation on account of global conditions, but the government took adequate steps to control it and effectively reined it in.
