Indian Muslim Council-USA, termed it “unacceptable” the use of violence or hate language when done in the name of Islam and Muslims. The press statement released by the advocacy group based in USA deplored the sequence of events triggered by the violent protests against Taslima Nasrin in Hyderabad.
The statement expressed shock at the reports that a bounty have been put on Taslima Nasrin, condemning it in the strongest terms.
While recognizing that India is a secular democracy that protects the freedom of speech and religion of all, there are many who use these freedoms for “political gains” or for “earning fame and money.” IMC was emphatic that Indians “must not attempt to challenge this through use of violence and hate speech for it ultimately undermines the harmony and order in a society.”
The statement released by Syed Ali Rahman of IMC-USA said that Islamophobia has become common globally. People like Taslima Nasrin utilize the freedom of speech platform for their anti-Islam and anti-Muslim rhetoric. “We believe, as hard as it may be the best approach to combat hate is through kindness and love as taught and practiced by Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) alternatively engage the Islamophobes or ignore them”, the statement read.
The statement also urged more dialogues and critical reviews of Islamophobic literature that will expose their anti-Islam rhetoric.
IMC-USA also urged the leadership of the Indian Muslim community to act with wisdom and not in a way that empowers Islamophobes and brings disrepute and loss of good will for the community.
