Lucknow : At least 125 supporters of the Samajwadi Party (SP) have been named in a rioting case after they allegedly disrupted polling in an Uttar Pradesh village, police said Tuesday.
However, police denied media reports that SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was accused in the case.
During the re-polling on Monday in Parsana village, in Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency of Etawah district, Mulayam supporters broke the security cordon and tried to capture an election booth, according to the police.
The angry SP supporters alleged that voters who carried ration cards as their ID proof, were not allowed to vote. They started demonstrating and clashed with police.
“A case against nearly 125 supporters of Mulayam Singh has been registered for disrupting polling,” senior superintendent of police Kripa Shanker Singh told IANS.
Media reports said an FIR was also registered against the SP chief, but the police denied this.
“He (Mulayam Singh) is not an accused, therefore there is no question of registering an FIR against him,” the police officer said.
Police are yet to make any arrest in connection with the case.
The accused have been booked under sections 147 (rioting) and 131 (Peoples Representation Act) of the Indian Penal Code, according to the police.
