Eleven legislators of NDA had moved a no-confidence motion against the speaker Tuesday after Aalam refused a debate in the house about Chief Minister Madhu Koda’s alleged links with trader Vinod Sinha.

A newspaper report had alleged that Sinha had been calling the shots in the chief minister’s office and dictating to the officials. Alleging that Sinha has amassed a wealth of over Rs.2 billion, the NDA has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.

The speaker rejected the motion Wednesday and said: “I have rejected the no-confidence motion against me because as per law the notice should be served 14 days before the house is in session.”

The NDA legislators then trooped into the well of the house and shouted slogans against him.

They also forced the assembly staff to vacate their seats in the house by pushing their chairs. The situation turned chaotic when the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) members also came in the well of the house. The ruling and opposition members had heated arguments.

Considering the gravity of the situation the speaker adjourned the house sine die. Two more days were left for the current monsoon session to end.

Reacting to the issue, NDA legislator Inder Singh Namdhari said: “The ruling alliance had made up its mind to ensure that the house is adjourned sine die by advancing wrong arguments.”

Echoing his views, former chief minister Arjun Munda said: “This is very sad that the opposition is not allowed to speak in the house. Should we close our mouth and not raise public interest issues?”

Refuting the NDA arguments, deputy chief minister Sudhir Mahto said: “The opposition has no issues and it is creating a mess in the house over trivial issues”.

The assembly has been witnessing chaotic scenes since Monday over Koda’s alleged close association with Sinha. Koda has admitted knowing Sinha “as he belongs to his district”.
