Chennai : Despite the political impasse over the India-US nuclear deal, neither the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in New Delhi nor the DMK government in Tamil Nadu will fall, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said Wednesday.
The DMK stalwart’s comments came at a function here to commemorate the birth centenary of Communist leader P. Jeevanandam. The function was organised by the DMK government and attended by state communist leaders as well as those from the Congress party and the PMK.
The Left parties have threatened to withdraw their outside support to the UPA government in New Delhi if it went ahead with the contentious deal.
DMK, a key UPA constituent, has strongly supported the Congress that leads the coalition and has spoken in favour of the nuclear deal.
“The face-off between the Congress and the Left parties over the nuclear deal” will not lead to the fall of the union government, Karunanidhi said.
“Those parties advocating the unity of the nation should demonstrate their unity to others,” he said, urging the Congress and the Left to stay united in national interest.
Meanwhile, Karunanidhi described as unnecessary remarks by India’s ambassador to the US, Ronen Sen, which led to an uproar in parliament Tuesday. The DMK leader commented in Wednesday’s edition of the party mouthpiece Mmurasoli, that “it is not good to blow up” the matter.
“The issue has been magnified and everybody should try to solve it amicably”, he advised.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Puducherry, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy of the Congress unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Jeevanandam and recalled the “simplicity, patriotic zeal and concern for the poor” the left leader had.
