Pakistani troops kill 47 militants in Swat

Islamabad : Pakistani forces have killed 47 Taliban fighters, including two important commanders, in the northwestern Swat valley and three neighbouring districts over the last 24 hours, a spokesman for the Pakistani Army said Saturday.

Major General Athar Abbas told reporters in Islamabad that some areas of the Swat valley adjoining Shangla district have been cleared of the rebels. He added locals displaced by the ongoing military operation could return to their homes.

“The security forces are closing in from different directions and we have been able to inflict many more casualties,” said Abbas. “During the last 24 hours, 47 terrorists have been killed and also some arrests have been made. Three security personnel were injured.”

The spokesman said the government forces were getting close to Mingora, the main town in the Swat valley. The aim is to block the terrorists from fleeing the city.
