Police cracked the mystery behind the gruesome murder of Sujatha when Padma confessed to killing the child fearing she would expose her illicit liaison with her boyfriend Seenu.

Padma, 25, tied Sujatha with a rope and set her ablaze in her rented room of a penthouse at Venkatagiri in Jubilee Hills neighborhood here Tuesday.

Police cracked the case within 24 hours after tracing the call made by Padma from her mobile phone to her boyfriend. Padma has been arrested while police were on the lookout for Seenu to confirm if he too was involved in the murder.

The mystery was solved after police grilled Padma finding several loose ends in her version.

The charred body of Sujatha was found in Padma’s room Tuesday evening. Padma, whose husband Venkatesh is a taxi driver, had told police that two strangers barged into her room, blindfolded her, tied the girl with a rope, sprinkled kerosene on her and fled after setting the girl afire.

However, the inconsistent version given by Padma and the circumstantial evidence raised suspicions over her claim and police picked up her along with her husband for questioning.

Sujatha, a student of second standard and hailing from Makthal of Mahbubnagar district, had come to her grandfather Nagappa’s house in the city for summer vacations a month ago. Her parents, Narsimha and Nagalaxmi, live in the village.

The girl used to frequent Padma’s house located in the same locality. She went to Padma’s house at 4.30 pm on Tuesday but never returned.
